'A Many-splendored Thing' (E. Elslager, 1999) Large hosta, 15" high by 41" wide. Ed Elslager's large H. sieboldiana type selection from 'Dorothy Benedict' X H. hypoleuca cross produces very large leaves with a dark green center. A very wide greenish yellow margin circles the nearly round corrugated leaves. Pale lavender flowers top the clump in midsummer. $20.00
'Abiqua Drinking Gourd' (Walden West 87) Large 24" high by 48" wide, near white flowers on 24" scapes. Leaves are thick, rich dark blue, deeply cupped and heavily corrugated. In fact, no other hosta boasts such deeply cupped leaves. Depth of the leaf cupping can be up to 4" and the powdery gray underside of the leaves is often visible because of the cupping. 'American Icon' (H. Hansen/Shady Oaks Nursery, 2004) 24" high by 60" wide. This majestic sport from the ever popular 'Choo Choo Train' produces a very large (nearly 6 ft.) clump of green leaves with a wide gold edge. Pale lavender flowers top the clump in midsummer. 'American Sweetheart' (Hansen/Shady Oaks) Medium 24" high by 41" wide. Thick, wide white center, widely and irregularly margined mid to dark olive-green with chartreuse streaks jetting towards the midrib, satiny, dimpled; edge slightly rippled or kinked, elliptic to oval. What a stunning specimen! Imagine taking an old favorite like Mildred Seaver's Hosta 'Sea Thunder' and making the leaves twice as thick to prevent sun scald, the edges twice as wide to provide more vigor, and the flowers twice as large. If you have a good imagination, then you can imagine Hosta 'American Sweetheart', named after the hosta queen herself. Each glossy green leaf is highlighted by a dramatic creamy white central pattern that holds all season. 'August Moon' (Summers 96) Large 20" high by 45" wide. Large and deeply crinkled, leaves 9" long by 8" wide. Outstanding; gold intensifies in brighter light. A truly lutescent hosta. Round cupped leaves (6"x5") unfurl in the spring a vivid chartreuse. During summer these thick leaves turn a golden color that will brighten any dark corner. Not just for shade, their best color is displayed when given some sun. Several plants together in a natural drift are spectacular. 'Avocado' (Diesens) Large 24"h by 54"w. Leaf blade 10" by 8". Medium gold center with 2" wide green margin. Very nice sport of H. 'Guacamole', dark green margin is quite wide and surrounds a narrow gold center. Overall appearance of the plant is a lot darker than its parent and the leaves seem to be somewhat thicker. Vigorous grower that makes a nice clump in no time and will be topped with pale lavender flowers that are fragrant. Sun tolerant. $15.00
'Baby Blue Eyes'(Solberg 2006) (‘Cody’ X ‘Dorset Blue’) NEW 2010 Mini-Small, (6” X 16”) This little hosta is a darling. It is a very cute tight, flat mound of heart-shaped pretty blue leaves that grows fast. Not too big for a large trough, it is also tough enough to show off in the garden. 'Baby Bunting' (R. Savory, 1982) Dwarf hosta, 11" high by 26" wide. Small, green, round heart-shaped leaves with bell-shaped pale lavender flowers in midsummer. 'Baby Bunting' is excellent as a minature specimen or used as a ground cover hosta. It is one of the best miniature hostas from Savory's nursery. Slug resistant. $12.00
'Barbara Ann' 33" high by 75" wide. A sport of H. sieboldiana 'Elegans'. Discovered in Great Britain by two lab technicians named Barbara and Ann. Forms a stunning clump of thick, corrugated, blue-green leaves with a broad, cream margin that lightens to white. Near-white flowers appear on 24" scapes in midsummer. 'Battle Star'(R. Goodwin, 2006) 14" high by 32" wide. Considered by Indianapolis hybridizer Randy Goodwin to be his best introduction to date. 'Battle Star' boasts extremely glossy, blue-green cupped leaves with a slightly rippled yellow margin. With its sieboldiana heritage it has good substance. 'Beckoning' (Saville) Large 28" high by 60" wide. Near white tubular flowers on 48" scapes. Huge heart shaped leaves; wax coated; gold leaves with highly irregular, and streaking, blue-green margin. Hosta 'Beckoning' is a unique new sport of 'Blue Angel' with a yellow center and wide blue-green margin on huge heart-shaped leaves. 'Bitsy Gold' (Savory 85) Dwarf 8" high by 21" wide. Long, thin, narrow leaves, chartreuse turning yellow; edge slightly rippled. Moisture is its main requirement. Will tolerate morning sun; can be grown in a pot plunged in a pond as long as the crown is above water level. $12.00
'Bix Blues' 22” high by 44” wide. Leaf detail: 10” long by 7” wide; deep blue-green; oval-shaped; thick substance. Flowering: whitish flowers in July on two-foot scapes. Dense mound of incredibly blue foliage; hybrid of ‘Halcyon’ X H. sieboldiana ‘Elegans’ developed by Ron Simmering; convention plant for the 2007 MRHS meeting in Davenport, Iowa. 'Blazing Saddles' (T. Avent, 2000) Large hosta, 18" high by 45" wide. This beautiful bold hosta is a seedling from 'Blue Umbrellas'. The 4-foot clump is comprised of large, oblong leaves with a nice wide creamy-white edge. Medium lavender flowers top the broad clump in midseason. 'Blazing Saddles' is a great combination of vigor and unusual leaf shape. You will like this one! Slug resistant. $20.00
'Blue Angel' (Aden 86) Giant hosta, 32" high by 70-90" wide, white flowers. Leaf blade 16" by 12". Thick, dark blue-grey to dark blue-green, slight dimpling when mature, prominent, closely ribbed veins; edges rippled, arching, convex. Grow in few hours of morning sun followed by light shade. 'Blue Haired Lady' Large hosta. 17” high by 44” wide. Leaf detail: 9” long by 6” wide; bluish green early, shiny dark green by mid-summer; good substance Flowering: whitish flowers in July on scapes up to 30” high. Open-pollinated seedling of Hosta yingeri from Greg Johnson of Marshalltown, Iowa; outstanding substance, shine, and dense clump habit. $15.00
'Blue Hawaii' (Olga Petryszyn 99) This stunning upright specimen made a 32" tall x 80" wide architectural clump of corrugated, flat, blue leaves. In midsummer, the clump is topped with a 44" tall flower scape bearing white, lightly fragrant white flowers. Slug resistant and tall. $20.00
'Blue Ivory' Showy sport of the ever-popular 'Halcyon'. Medium sized hosta, 18" high by 43" wide, with thick, slug resistant foliage. In spring, the leaves display a wide, creamy white margin and blue center. By summer, the margins have brightened to white and the center deepens to blue-green. 'Blue Mouse Ears' (E. & J. Deckert, 2000) Dwarf hosta, 8" high by 19" wide. Who couldn't fall in love with a cute little hosta with a name like that? Small round gray-green leaves are comprised of a substance so thick you have to feel it to believe it. Lavender flowers on short scapes proportionate to the clump top it in midsummer. 'Blue Shadows' (Anderson 80) Large 16" high by 40" wide, white flowers. Superior dark blue margin with colourful variations of chartreuse to bluish-green in center. 'Blue Umbrellas' Giant and tall hosta, 32" high by 72" wide. Forms a huge mound of 14" long, inversely cupped (downward) leaves like a pile of small, blue umbrellas. Early growth is blue-green, but turns darker green by early summer. Thick, corrugated leaves are very slug resistant. Very pale lavender flowers appear on 40" scapes in midsummer. 'Blue Whirl' 23" high by 52" wide. Narrow, wavy, pointed leaves of frosted, silvery blue; heavily veined; slug resistant. A 1978 Aden introduction. The mature size is 30 x 20". 'Blueberry Muffins' NEW 2010 15" high by 40" wide. This excellent new blue hosta is a strong grower and reliable performer in the landscape. It forms a medium sized mound of large, blue, rounded leaves that are rugose and puckered in unusual patterns. Late in the season, the foliage transitions to green. 'Bottom Line' (Anderson) Giant hosta 26" high by 67" wide. Leaf blade 16" by 14". Very green, solid wide gold edge; deeply ribbed and veined; glossy surface. 'Sum and Substance' sport. Looks similar to 'Lady Isobel Barnett' and 'Sum it Up', but has a much more pronounced variegation. Sun tolerant and slug resistant. $20.00
'Brave Amherst' (Lachman 93) Large 23" high by 55"wide, near white flowers. Very thick, light blue-green, narrowly and irregularly margined and streaked yellow turning cream, corrugated; edge slightly rippled; slightly cupped. A great improvement on similar hostas since margins do not scorch. Forms an impressive clump. Slug resistant. $20.00
'Bridal Veil' (Hird) Large 20" high by 48" wide. Leaf blade 11" by 5". Green center, neatly rippled, creamy white margin. Beautiful, graceful plant.$15.00
'Bright Lights' (Aden/Klehm NR) Medium 20" high by 52" wide, white flower. Thick, cloudy chartreuse to yellow, widely margined blue-green with streaks jetting toward the midrib, corrugated; edge flat to occasionally kinked, folded, oval, cuspidate tip. Site in light to moderate shade so that the subtle colour contrast will be achieved. Leaves emerge blue slowly assuming the subtle variegation. Slug resistant and sun tolerant. $15.00
'Brother Stephan' Large hosta, 28" high by 62" wide. Of all the spectacular hosta introductions Olga has blessed us with over the years, I would have to say 'Brother Stephan' is simply one of the best. A moderate grower, 'Brother Stefan' boasts large, heavily corrugated gold leaves with a wide dark green margin. Near white flowers top the thick leaves in early summer. 'Brutus'(D. Beilstein 2007) (‘Sea Drift’ X H. venusta) - NEW 2010 Very Large, (36” X 65”) ‘Brutus’ is a huge-leafed, dark green monster that is a little unruly. At maturity, every leaf has an intricate pattern of ridges and valleys that draw closer inspection. It is topped by pretty purple flowers in early summer on tall scapes. 'Cameo' (H. Hansen/Shady Oaks Nursery, 2002) Dwarf hosta, 8" high by 16" wide. Hosta 'Cameo' is the last in the series of variegated miniature hostas derived from 'Baby Bunting'. Essentially the reverse variegation pattern of 'Pandora's Box' it features tiny round green leaves edged with a creamy-white margin. Tiny lavender flowers top the clump in early summer. 'Cameo' is particularly effective in a trough or rock garden, or along a path in the shaded woodland garden. $20.00
'Candy Dish' NEW 2010 (Summers, Wrede 2003) (‘Urajiro Hachijo’ seedling) - Medium, (12” X 24” or larger) This may be as close to the perfect hosta leaf as there is. Start with heavy substance and dark green color, then add a deeply ruffled margin to a broad heart-shaped leaf with purple petioles. 'Captain Kirk' (K. Brill) Large 23" high by 42" wide. Good substance, emerging chartreuse turning first yellow then ivory, widely margined bright mid-green, dimpled, strongly veined; edge almost flat, slightly arching, widely oval. 'Carnival' (Lachman 86) Large 18" high by 44" wide. Thick, mid to dark green-blue to green-grey, widely and irregularly margined, yellow to cream with celadon streaking and mottling jetting toward the midrib, intensely corrugated; edge slightly rippled, convex, oval to heart-shaped. A strikingly colourful mound. Sun tolerant. Slug resistant. $15.00
'Cat's Eyes' (Japan NR) Dwarf hosta, 5" high by 14" wide. Site in good light to light shade with some morning sun. Very cute! This new miniature H. venusta hybrid from Japan is another great addition to the increasing selection of these charming dwarf hostas. The small rounded dark green leaves are each highlighted by a wide creamy white center. H. 'Cat's Eyes' is perfect for a bonsai garden, trough garden, or a special place in the garden where closeup viewing is possible and can be protected from larger more aggressive neighbors. 'Chesapeake Bay' (O. Petryszyn, 2004) Large hosta, 24" high by 56" wide. 'Chesapeake Bay' is the latest blue hosta in the "Americana Series" from Master Hybridizer Olga Petryszyn of Indiana. Large "oyster-shaped" leaves comprise a large mound of foliage, reminding the breeder of underwater plants in a current when the leaves are moved by the wind. 'Clear Fork River Valley' Large hosta, 28” high by 51” wide. According to Mark Zilis it is ranked as one of the best for intense corrugation and dark green foliage. 'Climax' (G. Jones, 2000) Large 22" high by 48" wide. Thick, corrugated, dark green leaves, edged by a very wide, bright gold border. This Gil Jones introduction is a sport of the dramatic H. 'High Noon'. Instead of having all gold leaves, however, H. 'Climax' has heavily corrugated green leaves, each with a 1" wide golden border. Each large 4'+ clump has the same vase-shaped habit of H. 'High Noon'. In late spring, this specimen hosta is topped with 32" scapes of light lavender flowers....a superb specimen plant! 'Clovelly' 22" high by 48" wide. Easily recognizable at a single glance; has one of the best ruffled leaf edges of any hosta. Green hosta with large, nearly round, horizontally held leaves with prominent deep piecrust edges. Even young plants show the attractive ruffling. This plant is named for the pebbled streets of Clovelly, England because mature leaves show some pebbling or dimpling on the surface. Quickly forms a neat, open mound of foliage with good substance. 'Corkscrew' (R. Solberg, 2003) Dwarf, 8" high by 18" wide. Hosta 'Corkscrew' has to be one of the most distinct green hostas to hit the market in years. Considered a "hybridizer's breakthrough," this Solberg introduction (H. 'Tortifrons' x 'One Man's Treasure') features glossy, dark green leaves that are twisted and curled like H. 'Tortifrons'. 'Country Mouse' (H. Hansen, NR) Dwarf hosta, 6" high by 14" wide. 'Country Mouse' displays tiny heart-shaped, blue-green leaves encircled with a pure white margin. 'Craker Crumbs' (R. Solberg, 2002) Dwarf hosta, 7" high by 15" wide. Looking for a new miniature hosta for that special spot in the garden or to jazz up a trough of other minis? 'Cracker Crumbs', introduced at the 2002 AHS Convention in Spokane, WA in June, has bright shiny, gold leaves with a shiny, dark margin that looks painted on. Like it's parent, 'Shiny Penny', the color becomes chartreuse, almost coppery in summer's heat. It has great substance and makes a tight, fast growing mound.
