FIELD GROWN
PERENNIALS
This is the 'bread and butter' of Budd Gardens Perennials. We are
well known for our hardy perennials that we grow in our fields and dig
up and pot as the season progresses. The plants have well established
roots and have been wintered-over in our fields. Customers continually
remark about their size as they create an 'instant garden look' and
about their hardiness.
Often sold in full bloom they provide the consumer with their actual
colours and not a photo which can distort the true colours. These
plants are sold in 2 and 3 gallon containers and some even larger.

'Blue
Butterfly' Flower continuously until seed-set in the fall, and
their loose, spreading inflorescences make a more impressive display,
both in the garden or as cut flowers. It is a well-known fact that
hummingbirds zero in on red, but they love a true blue just as much.
The spurs reward the birds with sweet nectar. Blue Butterfly require
little more than a moist well-drained soil and a sunny location, and
are not bothered with hot summers, as are the traditional varieties.
Though technically considered perennial to zone 3, their return is by
no means guaranteed and they are at best short-lived, but will
self-sow if pleased with the site. The new seedlings are difficult to
distinguish from weeds, do not pull indiscriminately. Dwarf bushy
mounds, covered with brilliant blue flowers. A best seller. 12"
high, June-September.

outbreaks on the delicate stems of Dianthus. Pine bows cut from your
Christmas tree should work well. Blooms June to September, 8"
high.

LAVENDULA
(Lavender) Zone 4-9 Full sun
Lavender must be grown in full sun to be able to produce flowers, so
do not hesitate to plant them in those hot, dry areas where nothing
else seems to grow. They will actually grow better in poor, gravelly
soil than in rich humus; don't be tempted to enrich the soil when you
plant it. Sharp drainage, especially in winter, is essential for
preventing crown rot. Other than that, Lavender is known to have few
problems with pests and diseases.

LEUCANTHEMUM
(Shasta Daisy) Zone 4-9 Full sun to part shade
Leucanthemums require full sun and well-drained soil to be at their
best. Winter drainage is especially important; planting in raised beds
will help to provide these conditions. Division can be done in either
spring or fall, and is recommended due to this perennial's tendancy to
be short-lived. Shasta Daisies are all-time favorites for the
perennial border. The cheery flowers begin to appear in late spring
and continue on for several months if faithfully deadheaded. Shastas
mix so effortlessly with other perennials that no garden should be
without them!
|
|

Flax has been grown in England for centuries and is still farmed in
Europe today as a source of fiber to make linens and rope. Try to pick
a flower stem and you will understand why. 'Sapphire' is a tireless
performer, especially when given a proper growing environment; light,
well-drained soil and full sun are best. All Flax species abhor 'wet
feet', especially when it is a result of poor winter drainage, so make
sure you provide very well-drained soil. Once established, it will be
quite drought tolerant. This is a great plant for gardens, since it
tolerates the summer heat very well. 12" high.

compact plants will be produced. If no pinching is done, prepare to

flowers are borne on tall spikes from late spring thru summer. This
variety has ascending branches with a neater outline than the species.

|
MONARDA
(Beebalm, Bergamot) Zone 3-9 Full sun
Monarda is native to eastern North America, so it is easy to grow and
it multiplies quickly. The flowers' sweet nectar attracts scores of
hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to the garden. The aromatic
foliage smells like mint when crushed and is often used to flavor
teas. Monarda can be found naturally along riverbanks and enjoys this
rich, organic, moist soil. However, it will grow in average soil as
well. Full sun is best, but light shade is tolerated. Plants tend to
spread more quickly in the shade, however. Most monardas multiply
rapidly either by underground stems or self-sowing. In order to keep
plants healthy and vigorous, they should be divided at least every
three years in the spring. Deadheading spent blooms will prolong the
bloom time. Powdery mildew is a common fungal problem with monarda.
Some varieties are more resistant to it than others. To prevent this
fungus from appearing, large clumps should be thinned out so that the
air circulates freely around them. The soil should also be kept
consistantly moist; dry soil promotes powdery mildew.

RUDBECKIA
(Black Eyed Susans) Zone 3-9 Full sun
Rudbeckias like full sun, but they also will do well in partial
shade. Plant them in well-drained, not overly rich soil. Remove spent
flowers in order to stimulate continuous bloom. Plants will self-seed.
If this is not desired, cut the plants back in fall. Rudbeckias are
very easy to divide in the spring. They also make great cut flowers.

'Goldsturm'
One of the most popular perennials available today, having earned the
prestigious Perennial Plant of the Year Award in 1999. Plants have a
long season of bloom and a sturdy, upright habit. The gold daisy-like
flowers have a distinct dark brown central cone and are held on
branching stems. Do not deadhead these cones if you want winter
interest since the black seed heads remain attractive throughout the
winter and the seeds provide a source of food for small birds. 24"
high, blooms from July to October.

SEDUM
(Stonecrop) Zone 2-9 Full sun to part shade
Tall, upright sedums form substantial clumps of foliage which can be
substituted for shrubs in the landscape. Their stout, sturdy stems
support the massive flower heads which develop in summer and burst
into bloom in fall. If left standing, they provide winter interest and
food for birds.Older plants tend to split in the center if they have
not been divided. Pinching the taller varieties back by half in early
summer will also help prevent them from splitting. This plant is not
usually bothered by pests or diseases. The seed heads of the taller
varieties provide excellent winter interest and food for birds. Remove
them in spring when the new growth begins to show.

TRADESCANTIA
(Spiderwort) Zone 3-9 Full sun to full shade Tradescantia is
adaptable to many types of soil as long as it is moist and
well-drained. It will grow in any amount of sunlight, from full sun to
full shade. In full sun, plants must be kept moist to prevent
scorching. Plants will have nicer foliage, though perhaps fewer
flowers, in partial to full shade. After flowering declines, cut
plants all the way back. This will encourage new growth and a second
round of bloom. This clump-forming perennial is easy to divide in
either the spring or in early fall. Seedlings may sprout around the
parent plant, but they are easily lifted and moved. Tradscantia is
very attractive when planted in a naturalized area or by a pond or
stream.

VERONICA
(Speedwell) Zone 3-9 Full sun to part shade This perennial
is tolerant of a wide range of well-drained soil types. Amending
soils, especially very heavy and light types, with generous amounts of
organic matter will result in improved performance. Although tolerant
of partial shade, it will flower better in full sun. Deadheading will
promote additional blooms. Shear back the foliage if it becomes
worn-looking after flowering.

'Royal
Candles' Masses of violet-blue spikes dart up above the compact,
upright, deep green foliage of 'Royal Candles' PPAF all summer long.
Butterflies love to drink their sweet nectar. Unlike some other
veronicas, the bottom foliage of this variety does not die out. This
trait coupled with its shorter habit makes it ideal for the front of
the border, as an edging, or in containers. Many people consider this
cultivar to be the best upright form of veronica. 15-18" high.
