FIELD GROWN PERENNIALS
This is the 'bread and butter' of Budd Gardens Perennials. We are
well known for our hardy perennials that we grow in our fields and dig
up and pot as the season progresses. The plants have well established
roots and have been wintered-over in our fields. Customers continually
remark about their size as they create an 'instant garden look' and
about their hardiness.
Often sold in full bloom they provide the consumer with their actual
colours and not a photo which can distort the true colours. These
plants are sold in 2 and 3 gallon containers and some even larger.

'Blue Butterfly' Flower
continuously until seed-set in the fall, and their loose, spreading
inflorescences make a more impressive display, both in the garden or
as cut flowers. It is a well-known fact that hummingbirds zero in on
red, but they love a true blue just as much. The spurs reward the
birds with sweet nectar. Blue Butterfly require little more than a
moist well-drained soil and a sunny location, and are not bothered
with hot summers, as are the traditional varieties. Though technically
considered perennial to zone 3, their return is by no means guaranteed
and they are at best short-lived, but will self-sow if pleased with
the site. The new seedlings are difficult to distinguish from weeds,
do not pull indiscriminately. Dwarf bushy mounds, covered with
brilliant blue flowers. A best seller. 12" high, June-September.

delicate stems of Dianthus. Pine bows cut from your Christmas tree

LAVENDULA (Lavender) Zone 4-9 Full
sun
Lavender must be grown in full sun to be able to produce flowers, so
do not hesitate to plant them in those hot, dry areas where nothing
else seems to grow. They will actually grow better in poor, gravelly
soil than in rich humus; don't be tempted to enrich the soil when you
plant it. Sharp drainage, especially in winter, is essential for
preventing crown rot. Other than that, Lavender is known to have few
problems with pests and diseases.
|
|
'Munstead' Lavender Munstead is
a many-branched, somewhat woody perennial plant growing to 15 inches

|
LEUCANTHEMUM (Shasta Daisy) Zone 4-9
Full sun to part shade
Leucanthemums require full sun and well-drained soil to be at their
best. Winter drainage is especially important; planting in raised beds
will help to provide these conditions. Division can be done in either
spring or fall, and is recommended due to this perennial's tendancy to
be short-lived. Shasta Daisies are all-time favorites for the
perennial border. The cheery flowers begin to appear in late spring
and continue on for several months if faithfully deadheaded. Shastas
mix so effortlessly with other perennials that no garden should be
without them!
|
|
'Becky' 2003 PPA Plant of the
Year! This may be the best selection of Shasta yet. Prized for its
durability in the hot, humid summers of the south and its cold

cultivar. Copious amounts of very large, single, white blooms are

flower wands open from top to bottom in early summer, appearing to
glow at the tips. Narrow, opposite leaves are up to 10 inches long at
the base of the plant and decrease in length up the stems. In all,

best selections available for border gardens. It is a staple item for
cutting gardens; it adds a bright, vertical element to bouquets. 20-30"
high. $15.00 or 3 for $40.00
|
 |
LINUM (Flax) Zone 4-8 Full sun
|
|
'Sapphire' Flax has been grown
in England for centuries and is still farmed in Europe today as a
source of fiber to make linens and rope. Try to pick a flower stem and
you will understand why. 'Sapphire' is a tireless performer,
especially when given a proper growing environment; light,
well-drained soil and full sun are best. All Flax species abhor 'wet
feet', especially when it is a result of poor winter drainage, so make
sure you provide very well-drained soil. Once established, it will be
quite drought tolerant. This is a great plant for gardens, since it
tolerates the summer heat very well. 12" high. $15.00 or 3 for
$40.00
|
 |
MALVA (Mallow) Zone 4-9 Full sun
A shorter cousin of the Hollyhock, Malva is easy to grow and will

compact plants will be produced. If no pinching is done, prepare to
stake this plant.
|
|
'Moschata' One tough perennial!
Masses of soft pink, 2" wide, bowl-shaped flowers are borne on
tall spikes from late spring thru summer. This variety has ascending
branches with a neater outline than the species. Heat and drought are
not a problem for Malva. Though it is sometimes short-lived, it will
self-seed readily assuring years of blooms. 3-4 feet high. $15.00 or 3
for $40.00
|
 |
MONARDA (Beebalm, Bergamot) Zone 3-9
Full sun
Monarda is native to eastern North America, so it is easy to grow and
it multiplies quickly. The flowers' sweet nectar attracts scores of
hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to the garden. The aromatic
foliage smells like mint when crushed and is often used to flavor
teas. Monarda can be found naturally along riverbanks and enjoys this
rich, organic, moist soil. However, it will grow in average soil as
well. Full sun is best, but light shade is tolerated. Plants tend to
spread more quickly in the shade, however. Most monardas multiply
rapidly either by underground stems or self-sowing. In order to keep
plants healthy and vigorous, they should be divided at least every
three years in the spring. Deadheading spent blooms will prolong the
bloom time. Powdery mildew is a common fungal problem with monarda.
Some varieties are more resistant to it than others. To prevent this
fungus from appearing, large clumps should be thinned out so that the
air circulates freely around them. The soil should also be kept
consistantly moist; dry soil promotes powdery mildew.
|
|
'Blue Stocking' Very large,

very easy to divide in the spring. They also make great cut flowers.
|
|
'Goldsturm' One of the most
popular perennials available today, having earned the prestigious
Perennial Plant of the Year Award in 1999. Plants have a long season
of bloom and a sturdy, upright habit. The gold daisy-like flowers have
a distinct dark brown central cone and are held on branching stems. Do
not deadhead these cones if you want winter interest since the black
seed heads remain attractive throughout the winter and the seeds
provide a source of food for small birds. 24" high, blooms from
July to October. $15.00 or 3 for $40.00
|
 |
SEDUM (Stonecrop) Zone 2-9 Full sun
to part shade
Tall, upright sedums form substantial clumps of foliage which can be
substituted for shrubs in the landscape. Their stout, sturdy stems
support the massive flower heads which develop in summer and burst
into bloom in fall. If left standing, they provide winter interest and
food for birds. Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips: Sedum is one
of the most popular perennials grown in American gardens because it is
very easy to grow and hardy in most areas of the country. Because of
its thick, succulent leaves which can store water, sedum is drought
tolerant. It should be sited in average to poor soil that is
well-drained. Plants grown in rich soil tend to be lanky and open.
Most varieties should be grown in full sun to light shade. The lower
growing types, however, will survive in partial shade. Divide sedum
every 3-4 years to maintain its compact growth habit. Older plants
tend to split in the center if they have not been divided. Pinching
the taller varieties back by half in early summer will also help
prevent them from splitting. This plant is not usually bothered by
pests or diseases. The seed heads of the taller varieties provide
excellent winter interest and food for birds. Remove them in spring
when the new growth begins to show.
