FIELD GROWN PERENNIALS

This is the 'bread and butter' of Budd Gardens Perennials. We are well known for our hardy perennials that we grow in our fields and dig up and pot as the season progresses. The plants have well established roots and have been wintered-over in our fields. Customers continually remark about their size as they create an 'instant garden look' and about their hardiness.
Often sold in full bloom they provide the consumer with their actual colours and not a photo which can distort the true colours. These plants are sold in 2 and 3 gallon containers and some even larger.

'Blue Butterfly' Flower continuously until seed-set in the fall, and their loose, spreading inflorescences make a more impressive display, both in the garden or as cut flowers. It is a well-known fact that hummingbirds zero in on red, but they love a true blue just as much. The spurs reward the birds with sweet nectar. Blue Butterfly require little more than a moist well-drained soil and a sunny location, and are not bothered with hot summers, as are the traditional varieties. Though technically considered perennial to zone 3, their return is by no means guaranteed and they are at best short-lived, but will self-sow if pleased with the site. The new seedlings are difficult to distinguish from weeds, do not pull indiscriminately. Dwarf bushy mounds, covered with brilliant blue flowers. A best seller. 12" high, June-September.

Plant in full sun in well drained soil. Many of the deltoides Dianthus are prolific re-seeders. When mulching for winter protection avoid the use of organic mulches such as bark chips or straw. These organic mulches may cause fungus outbreaks on the delicate stems of Dianthus. Pine bows cut from your Christmas tree should work well. Blooms June to September, 8" high.

LAVENDULA (Lavender) Zone 4-9 Full sun
Lavender must be grown in full sun to be able to produce flowers, so do not hesitate to plant them in those hot, dry areas where nothing else seems to grow. They will actually grow better in poor, gravelly soil than in rich humus; don't be tempted to enrich the soil when you plant it. Sharp drainage, especially in winter, is essential for preventing crown rot. Other than that, Lavender is known to have few problems with pests and diseases.

'Munstead' Lavender Munstead is a many-branched, somewhat woody perennial plant growing to 15 inches tall. The narrow leaves are about 2 inches long and have a pleasing gray-green color. The small heavily fragrant lavender flowers are borne on long-stemmed, slender spikes. Cut faded whole flower spikes when the first flowers begin to open, and dry. It is used most often in sachets in the home and in perfumes.

LEUCANTHEMUM (Shasta Daisy) Zone 4-9 Full sun to part shade
Leucanthemums require full sun and well-drained soil to be at their best. Winter drainage is especially important; planting in raised beds will help to provide these conditions. Division can be done in either spring or fall, and is recommended due to this perennial's tendancy to be short-lived. Shasta Daisies are all-time favorites for the perennial border. The cheery flowers begin to appear in late spring and continue on for several months if faithfully deadheaded. Shastas mix so effortlessly with other perennials that no garden should be without them!

'Becky' 2003 PPA Plant of the Year! This may be the best selection of Shasta yet. Prized for its durability in the hot, humid summers of the south and its cold tolerance in the north, 'Becky' has proven to be a sturdy, hardy cultivar. Copious amounts of very large, single, white blooms are produced atop strong stems which are ideal for cutting. Despite its height, this variety does not require staking. 36-42" high.

LIATRIS (Gayfeather) Zone 2-9 Full sun
Prefers more moisture than other members of the Liatris family, and thrives in well-drained soil in full sun. The roots of this genus are tuberous, and they may be lifted every few years and divided. When doing so, use a sharp knife, allow at least one eye per division.

'Kobold' Bright, rosy lavender flower wands open from top to bottom in early summer, appearing to glow at the tips. Narrow, opposite leaves are up to 10 inches long at the base of the plant and decrease in length up the stems. In all, Liatris is a very strong vertical accent and 'Kobold' is one of the best selections available for border gardens. It is a staple item for cutting gardens; it adds a bright, vertical element to bouquets. 20-30" high.

LINUM (Flax) Zone 4-8 Full sun

'Sapphire' Flax has been grown in England for centuries and is still farmed in Europe today as a source of fiber to make linens and rope. Try to pick a flower stem and you will understand why. 'Sapphire' is a tireless performer, especially when given a proper growing environment; light, well-drained soil and full sun are best. All Flax species abhor 'wet feet', especially when it is a result of poor winter drainage, so make sure you provide very well-drained soil. Once established, it will be quite drought tolerant. This is a great plant for gardens, since it tolerates the summer heat very well. 12" high.

MALVA (Mallow) Zone 4-9 Full sun
A shorter cousin of the Hollyhock, Malva is easy to grow and will happily fill in the empty spaces in your garden. It enjoys full sun and well-drained soils with a moderate to high pH. By pinching back the tips of this plant when it reaches 12 inches tall, shorter, more compact plants will be produced. If no pinching is done, prepare to stake this plant.

'Moschata' One tough perennial! Masses of soft pink, 2" wide, bowl-shaped flowers are borne on tall spikes from late spring thru summer. This variety has ascending branches with a neater outline than the species. Heat and drought are not a problem for Malva. Though it is sometimes short-lived, it will self-seed readily assuring years of blooms. 3-4 feet high.
$14.00 or 3 for $40.00 or 5 for $60.00

MONARDA (Beebalm, Bergamot) Zone 3-9 Full sun
Monarda is native to eastern North America, so it is easy to grow and it multiplies quickly. The flowers' sweet nectar attracts scores of hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to the garden. The aromatic foliage smells like mint when crushed and is often used to flavor teas. Monarda can be found naturally along riverbanks and enjoys this rich, organic, moist soil. However, it will grow in average soil as well. Full sun is best, but light shade is tolerated. Plants tend to spread more quickly in the shade, however. Most monardas multiply rapidly either by underground stems or self-sowing. In order to keep plants healthy and vigorous, they should be divided at least every three years in the spring. Deadheading spent blooms will prolong the bloom time. Powdery mildew is a common fungal problem with monarda. Some varieties are more resistant to it than others. To prevent this fungus from appearing, large clumps should be thinned out so that the air circulates freely around them. The soil should also be kept consistantly moist; dry soil promotes powdery mildew.

'Blue Stocking' Very large, purple-blue florets appear in tight clusters atop stocky, square stems from midsummer to fall. This variety is one of the most mildew resistant as reported throughout the United States. It was discovered in Georgia and introduced into the trade by Saul Nursery. 2-3 feet high.

OENETHERA (Beard Tongue) Zone 3-9 Full sun to Part shade The trailing habit and drought tolerance of this perennial makes it ideal for softening the edges of pathways or planting in rock gardens.

'missouriensis' Canary yellow, mildly fragrant, 3 inch wide flowers are produced in great numbers over dark green, lanceolate leaves from early thru midsummer. Following the substantial blooms, 2 to 3 inch long, 4-winged seed pods are produced which are beautiful in dried floral arrangements; 12" high by 15" wide.

PAPAVER (Poppy) Zone 3-7 Full Sun In the center of a poppy's flower rests a very large, velvety-black seed capsule surrounded by prominent, dark purple stamens. Altogether, these flowers absolutely steal the show when they are in bloom. After the bloom cycle is completed however, these perennials will go dormant, so plan on planting other plants nearby to fill in the gaps.

'Brilliant'Wildfire red blooms are borne on wiry, pubescent stems from late spring thru early summer. The petals have a crepe-like appearance and a satiny texture. Each flower can measure 4 to 5 inches across. In the center of a poppy's flower rests a very large, velvety-black seed capsule surrounded by prominent, dark purple stamens. PENSTEMON (Beard Tongue) Zone 4-9 Full sun
Penstemons are very drought tolerant perennials that are easy to grow and are rarely bothered by insects or diseases. Plant them in full sun and watch as hummingbirds feast on their delicious nectar. Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips: Penstemons should be grown in full sun and very well-drained soil to avoid root rot. Soil fertility need only be average, but a light mulch in winter is recommended. Use Penstemons in the border, for naturalizing, and for cut flowers.

'Husker's Red' 1996 Perennial Plant Association Plant of the Year! Striking, maroon-red foliage with a dark green underlay distinguishes this Penstemon from the other cultivars. White flowers with a tinge of light pink are borne on strong, upright stems in early summer. 30-34" high.

RUDBECKIA (Black Eyed Susans) Zone 3-9 Full sun
Rudbeckias like full sun, but they also will do well in partial shade. Plant them in well-drained, not overly rich soil. Remove spent flowers in order to stimulate continuous bloom. Plants will self-seed. If this is not desired, cut the plants back in fall. Rudbeckias are very easy to divide in the spring. They also make great cut flowers.

'Goldsturm' One of the most popular perennials available today, having earned the prestigious Perennial Plant of the Year Award in 1999. Plants have a long season of bloom and a sturdy, upright habit. The gold daisy-like flowers have a distinct dark brown central cone and are held on branching stems. Do not deadhead these cones if you want winter interest since the black seed heads remain attractive throughout the winter and the seeds provide a source of food for small birds. 24" high, blooms from July to October.

SEDUM (Stonecrop) Zone 2-9 Full sun to part shade
Tall, upright sedums form substantial clumps of foliage which can be substituted for shrubs in the landscape. Their stout, sturdy stems support the massive flower heads which develop in summer and burst into bloom in fall. If left standing, they provide winter interest and food for birds.Older plants tend to split in the center if they have not been divided. Pinching the taller varieties back by half in early summer will also help prevent them from splitting. This plant is not usually bothered by pests or diseases. The seed heads of the taller varieties provide excellent winter interest and food for birds. Remove them in spring when the new growth begins to show.

'Autumn Joy' This upright variety sports flat clusters of rosy-red flowers. The foliage is a smooth grey-green and it looks great all season long. Popular variety because it is beautiful, easy to grow, and drought tolerant. 24" high, blooms end of September to end of October.

TRADESCANTIA (Spiderwort) Zone 3-9 Full sun to full shade Tradescantia is adaptable to many types of soil as long as it is moist and well-drained. It will grow in any amount of sunlight, from full sun to full shade. In full sun, plants must be kept moist to prevent scorching. Plants will have nicer foliage, though perhaps fewer flowers, in partial to full shade. After flowering declines, cut plants all the way back. This will encourage new growth and a second round of bloom. This clump-forming perennial is easy to divide in either the spring or in early fall. Seedlings may sprout around the parent plant, but they are easily lifted and moved. Tradscantia is very attractive when planted in a naturalized area or by a pond or stream.

'Virginiana' This selection has large flowers in a rich violet-blue shade. Plants should be trimmed back hard after the first flush of flowers is over, to rejuvenate the foliage and encourage repeat bloom in late summer. Happiest in a sunny, moist site. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in spring. Flowers are attractive to butterflies; 24" high by 24" wide.
$14.00 or 3 for $40.00 or 5 for $60.00

VERONICA (Speedwell) Zone 3-9 Full sun to part shade This perennial is tolerant of a wide range of well-drained soil types. Amending soils, especially very heavy and light types, with generous amounts of organic matter will result in improved performance. Although tolerant of partial shade, it will flower better in full sun. Deadheading will promote additional blooms. Shear back the foliage if it becomes worn-looking after flowering.
$14.00 or 3 for $40.00 or 5 for $60.00

'Royal Candles' Masses of violet-blue spikes dart up above the compact, upright, deep green foliage of 'Royal Candles' PPAF all summer long. Butterflies love to drink their sweet nectar. Unlike some other veronicas, the bottom foliage of this variety does not die out. This trait coupled with its shorter habit makes it ideal for the front of the border, as an edging, or in containers. Many people consider this cultivar to be the best upright form of veronica. 15-18" high.
