Hosta 'Gitchigumi' NEW 2014
LARGE 28” high by 48” wide
Slug resistant
(O. Petryszyn 2010) Adding to the Americana series, this time the hybridizer honors Minnesota. Matching the cool fluid surface of this leaf brings a large blue lake to mind. The native Ojibwe language refers to Lake Superior as Gitchigumi, meaning big water. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote about the lake in The Song of Hiawatha. The large shiny round blue leaves hold quite horizontally and are slightly seer suckered. The blue value seems unique. If you imagine white caps in the wind, you can see the white glaucous underside. The white bell shaped flowers are huge and heavily budded. Gloriously peaceful and soft on the eyes.

Slug resistant
Until now, this giant sized hosta from the late Mildred Seaver has never been commercially available. In fact, it was once auctioned off for $725 at a fundraiser! ‘Humpback Whale’ forms a massive, dome-shaped mound of blue-green, corrugated, heart-shaped leaves. Its color is bluest in the springtime. Blue-green scapes carry near-white, bell-shaped flowers in early summer. Mildred Seaver was known among hosta enthusiasts as the “Queen of Hostas”. In her lifetime, she registered 95 new varieties including: ‘Spilt Milk’, ‘Queen of the Seas’, and ‘Komodo Dragon’.

Hosta 'Island Breeze' NEW 2014
SMALL 12” high by 18” wide
Sun tolerant
(Walters Gardens) First came ‘Fire Island’ which was followed by its variegated progeny ‘Paradise Island’. This year, we are excited to introduce ‘Island Breeze’ which is the third member of this “tropical” family and a sport of ‘Paradise Island’. The improvements in this cultivar include more impressive variegation due to its wider margins, thicker leaf substance, and a strong growth rate. Wide, dark green margins stand in sharp contrast to the bright yellow centers in early spring. As summer approaches, the centers become more chartreuse when plants are grown in heavier shade or lighter yellow if they are grown in more sun. Like ‘Paradise Island’, this one also has showy red speckled petioles that bleed up into the leaves. Dark lavender flowers appear on reddish green scapes in midsummer.

Hosta 'Ivory Queen' NEW 2014
SMALL 12” high by 18” wide
Slug resistant and sun tolerant
(Walters Gardens) This classy looking hosta is a sport of the popular Hosta ‘Blue Ivory’ but with reverse pattern variegation. Surely fit for royalty, this queen of the shade garden forms a majestic mound of cream to near-white leaves with broad, long lasting blue-green margins and a dash of green jetting between the two. The leaves are nice and thick, making them less attractive to slugs. Pale lavender flowers top the whitish green scapes just above the foliage in midsummer.

Hosta 'Joy Ride' NEW 2014
MEDIUM 16” high by 36” wide
(Hans Hansen) This fun hosta forms a wriggly, broadly mounding mass of very wavy, blue-green leaves accented with upright folded edges. It adds terrific texture to shade gardens and combination container plantings. Widely flared, tubular, light lavender flowers are produced in midsummer. Hostas are exceedingly popular perennials in today's gardens due to their versatility in the landscape. Their subtle colors, tall flower scapes, and broad, coarse leaves fill a niche in garden designs that few other plants can achieve. Their large leaves provide excellent coverage for dying bulb foliage. Hostas also grow well in city environments where the air may be polluted by car exhaust, etc.
