CLEMATIS sun or part shade Zones 2 - 9

All varieties of Clematis cool rich soil with good drainage. They need an ample supply of moisture for the roots, and sun for the vines. When planting clematis on a wall, often a roof overhang will shield the soil from natural rainfall and the wall foundations tend to draw moisture from the soil, making for a very dry area. Dig out the soil to a depth of at least 2 feet and mix in ample well-made compost and old manure before planting clematis. Top dress with more of the same in the spring. To water, soak the soil gently with a hose so that the water gets to the roots, where it is needed. A plant such as Autumn Joy Sedum planted at the base will keep the roots cool.

"Light" pruning means cut back all stems to a pair of strong buds. "Hard" pruning means reduce all stems to just above base of the previous season's growth, within 30 inches of soil level. This may mean cutting off healthy looking green shoots but take them off anyway. Prune in the spring.
