PEONY

Old
favourites for the late spring border, prized for their large satiny
flowers. Almost every old garden you look at has at least one clump
and you can often tell where there was once a farmhouse by the presence
of a lilac bush and a peony. The handsome foliage remains attractive
all season, particularly when hoops or rings are used to hold clumps
together. Peonies prefer a deep, rich well drained loamy soil and
full sun exposure. Established plants should be fertilized in the
early spring and again immediately after blooming. Ants are often
seen feeding on the sugar that coats the sticky flower buds, but

The
bright flowers of Paniculata Phlox can be spectacular in the summer
border. Superb cut flowers and fragrant. Fertilize in early spring
and again just before flowering as these are heavy feeders. Powdery
mildew is often a problem. Simply growing Summer Phlox on a moist
site or keeping it well watered will help to prevent mildew. Increased
air circulation and a preventative fungicidal spray also help. Carolina
phlox are less prone to mildew and begin to bloom nearly a month
